‘All you have to do is mention bullrush and you’ve got bloody fifty friends,’ says Frank Bunce, legend.

‘He played a lot of bullrush? Well, that figures,’ says Brendhan Lovegrove, rugby fan. ‘He had such an amazing fend, Frank Bunce. What a great centre. He wasn’t all about just smashing through the middle. He would have a bit of a sidestep and when he got through it was because of pace and a really good fend. You don’t just fend people off because you’re big and you’ve got a big arm. A fend is a skill. A skill you can get from bullrush.’

Growing up in Mangere, they played it a little bit at school, lunchtime, but you’d end up going inside with your clothes ripped and all sweaty and bruised and battered sometimes, so you didn’t do too much of that. And you’d get told off by the teacher, then get home and maybe get told off again, maybe get a whack across the ear because you ripped whatever you were wearing.
